How to find a deep-cut answer
The board rewards the name fewer people reach. A superstar is often a 10-point layup. A correct bench player, a short stint, or an older draft pick can be the 100-point Buzzer Beater. You still have to be right. A clever wrong name scores nothing.
Themes in the first seven closed games
| Theme | Times | Example prompt | Example 100 | Why the rare name wins |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All-Star | 2 | Name an NBA All-Star | Jamaal Magloire (100) | Huge answer pool; pre-1990 injury replacements and role players are the deep cuts. |
| No. 1 overall pick | 1 | Name a No. 1 overall draft pick | Elton Brand (100) | Only ~60-ish names; late-career role players and older busts beat the obvious superstars. |
| Team / era | 5 | Name a Seattle SuperSonics player | Chuck Person (100) | Franchise + era narrows the pool; bench players and short stints are the 100-point answers. |
| Teammate | 1 | Name a teammate of LeBron James | Derrick Rose (100) | Same franchise, same season; role players and one-year teammates are the deep cuts. |
| College | 2 | Name an NBA player who went to Kentucky | Adrian Smith (100) | Mid-major and community-college answers; deep bench over one-and-done stars. |
| Statistical average | 10 | Name a player who averaged 20 PPG in a 2000s season | Tony Parker (100) | Threshold stats reward defenders/rebounders who barely cleared the line; older eras are deeper. |
| Career milestone | 3 | Name a player with 10,000 career points | Cedric Maxwell (100) | Milestone totals are longevity tests; long-career role players beat Hall of Famers. |
| Fun-fact constraint | 25 | Name an NBA player who is bald | Brian Cardinal (100) | Biographical constraints (bald, height, name, draft-day trade, Space Jam) have the widest pools; think role players. |
A way to spend the 25 seconds
- Read the constraint twice. Decade, team name, and “teammate” each throw out famous players who almost fit.
- If you know a layup, type it only when you are stuck. It banks 10 points and spends a second.
- For a team-plus-era prompt, skip the logo players and think of a one-year rental.
- For a counting-stat prompt, remember the threshold is a season average, not a career total, unless the prompt says career.
- Stop inventing spellings. A name that is not on the board does not partial-credit.
What this is not
There is no public review from a newspaper or a ratings site for a game that launched on 27 Oct 2026. The judgment above is how the scoring rules behave on the closed boards, not a developer tip sheet. Krillion’s “too clever” phrase is a different game’s community habit, not a Long Shot tier. Long Shot’s “Too Cute” is the 15-point tier.
Questions people ask
What is the best Long Shot strategy?
Answer within the written constraint, then prefer a correct rare name over a famous one. Famous correct names still score, but usually at the bottom of the tier list.
Are Buzzer Beaters random?
No. The game page says the point values are fixed before the day goes out. One or two names per prompt are worth 100.
Should I study every accepted name?
No. Closed days have thousands of accepted names. Learning the prompt shapes is more useful than memorizing the list.
